Ships In Bottles

About the Author, Bill Lucas

Bill Lucas

At age 10 or 11, Bill Lucas became interested in building models of airplanes, cars, trucks and boats. His model building focused mainly on ships. Bill eventually turned this hobby into a business called "Bay Drafting & Models, Inc." located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His work consisted of detailed design drafting including design and building of architectual and industrial scale models -- highly detailed work which required that everything had to be measured out in exact scale. After selling his business in 1970, Bill returned to his hobby of building ship models in bottles to the exact scale of the actual ship.

During his lifetime, Bill was a member of various model building and maritime associations including:

Manitowoc Maritime Museum
International Ships In Bottles Association

Bill was more interested in teaching the younger people how to build the miniature ships than in teaching them nautical terms. He always believed that part would come to them as they worked on the little ships and worked with the plans.

Although Bill has since passed away, his knowledge and years of experience about building ships in bottles lives on through his excellent book, "How To Build Historical Bottled Ships."
